Profile of a Killer

Refreshing approach to a serial killer theme; great acting.
The screenplay is excellent and worthy of a big budget film. This story is not your usual serial killer story. This truly is what the title says it is; It is a profile of a killer. It appears there is no motive for this young man's homicidal actions. He says he comes from a "good home", has never been abused, and his parents reveal that he has excelled academically and in any activity he's attempted at school. He's "just a kid", as Saul, the retired FBI agent observes.

So, why is he doing this? This is the task he sets for Saul after he kidnaps him. Profile the killer and figure out what makes him tick, what makes him murder.

This movie is not a blood fest or a jump out of your seat scary movie, but it is not for the little ones in your family . There are moments that are chilling.

Pollari, the actor, that plays David (the killer) created a character that is multi-layered. There are times where you see the chilling cold-blooded killer, the rage that...

Killer
This a movies that gives the point of view of the Killer and it is spooky and feels so real. This movie is a must see for those that drive on serial killer flicks.

Are you not entertained? lol if you know that quote..continue
this is a movie enjoyers dream. Unknown actors..but fantastic film. If you are looking to be distracted from life for a couple of hrs and wish to spend your hard earned dollars wisely...rent this....well done people.

Gomorrah [HD]

Riveting Movie about the true face of the Mafia
Based on true events. Captures the modern mafia clan (The Camorra) that runs Naples. One of the most unique films ever made about Italy's organized crime. This is not the Sopranos or Goodfellas so don't walk in expecting that. The glitzy aggrandized lifestyle isn't shown here. What is shown is probably the best presentation of what the nuts and bolts day to day business of the mob is, what it's all about & how it has invaded every aspect of Italian life. It's in subtitles but is still worth watching.

If this was to educate it missed it
Read the outline, watched it to the end.. and this is a perfect example of someone trying to make a documentary and failing. Other reviewers liked it, but if the intent was to make you feel depressed then it almost worked. I understand the crime in Italy, and the problems people have there, in some places in the US it is no better (Chicago) but it felt disjointed and it was tough to find a thread to follow in this one, other than the mafia is bad.

Gomorrah
The movie was okay, it was too long and sometimes the actions were cloudy and with subtitles sometimes you still do not get the true meaning of the language spoken. Some of the scenes were better than others.

Upside Down

Visual eye-candy from start to finish neves ceases to amaze
Imagine my surprise when this movie showed up this weekend out of nowhere, without any advance advertizing, on a single screen for all of Greater Cincinnati. I figured this wasn't going to play very long here so I went to see it right away.

"Upside Down" has a very intruiging premise: there are two worlds very close together but each with their own gravity. As the movie opens, we are informed of the basic three rules: 1. All matter is pulled by the gravity of the world that it comes from, and not the other. 2. An object's weight can be offset by matter from the opposite world (inverse matter). 3. After some time in contact, matter in contact with inverse matter burns. Wow, get your head around that! As the movie opens, we see young/eventual teenagers Adam (played by Jim Sturgess) and Eden (played by Kirsten Dunst) find each other in striking distance from opposing sides of a high mountain. Adam pulls in Eden with a rope, and as Eden is hanging/resting upside down in a rock,...

Outstanding Visuals and more - Must see pic.
Just wanted to say that if you are a sci-fi fan and enjoy outstanding visuals, like me, you must see this.
They probably got the visuals concept from "Inception" but actually used them in the plot instead of just for show (not that I didn't like Inception - I did).
For me - and I guess I can say I've probably seen it all - this is the most artistic outstandng visual movie I've seen in, say, the last 2 years or so.
It has got an interesting uplifting love story with a rather uncommon arc that might keep you guessing until the very end.
Get ready for something... different.

Escher-esque Romance
Eschewing the physics of reality, this film weaves a wonderfully fascinating tale of two young people in love. An astrophysics tale of Romeo and Juliet as the star-crossed lovers separated by a complex Escher-esque world of haves and have-nots.

Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst portray Adam and Eden respectively.

Adam lives in the frigid, dirty, and dank oily world of Downbelow. While Eden's home is Uptop, a dreamlike existence of warm bright air and glittering palaces of light. Two planets who share every basic elemental aspect, but are divided by an unspoken social and fiscal chasm. But there are special places, natural features of great height, where the two worlds almost touch one another. A place like the Sage Mountains.

A chance encounter between a thoughtful young boy and a young girl searching for her lost dog, accidentally bumping into one another at their respective peaks, begins a desperate dance as two halves of the same soul find, then lose...

#10: DeSean Jackson: The Making of a Father's Dream

I Love It!!
This was good and insightful. As the saying goes it takes a village to raise a child, this documentary shows how much that is true and in how many different ways it's true. Team Jackson was awesome and committed and succeeded in reaching their ultimate goal.

Great football and inspirational video!
Just finished watching it and for me, since I play football, it was extremely inspirational. I recommend this to any young football player. Keep believing, have a great work ethic, and you'll get there!

Great documentary!
The documentary was awesome! The end was a bit of a tear jerker but overall it was superb. Very intimate documentary.

Age of Champions

A truly well-done and inspirational documentary!
I was fortunate enough to see this film a few months ago, and I was deeply moved. It was so inspiring to see so many people late in life so full of energy, optimism and positivity. It demonstrates without a doubt that we never stop growing and it is always time to set new goals and strive to meet and exceed them. The film is well-edited and scored, and it left me feeling full of joy (even if it made me feel like I need to really get my act together fitness wise if I'm going to be playing tennis at 100!). Good job guys! I'll be recommending it to all my friends both young and young at heart!

WATCH IT!
This is one of those films that makes your cheeks ache from smiling. At 42, I stopped complaining about feeling old and often conjure memories of these guys - the ladies kicking butt on the basketball court, the swimming brothers, the 100+ guy playing tennis every day! A swift kick of a reminder to shut up and get moving!

A refreshing documentary!
If you wish you could pole-vault and you're under the age of eighty, you have no excuse! These competitors in the National Senior Olympics prove that age is no obstacle to achieving your dreams. People as old as my grandparents, and many who are even older, are seriously involved in competitive sports. I'll admit I never would have believed there was a 100 year old tennis champion until I saw him in action. I was completely blown away, and had to seriously reconsider what (if anything!) I thought was "impossible." In today's youth obsessed culture, it's easy to forget the old adage that it's never too late to make a change in your life. I'm sure the elderly will find this film very uplifting, but viewers of any age will derive a lot of inspiration from Age of Champions. I certainly did.

Starbuck

Time to Grow Up, Bucko!
This Canadian entry to the 2012 Seattle International Film Festival (this review was first posted May 7th, 2012) is a "crowd-pleaser," which is snide film-critic speak for "No betrayals, no angst, no slaughters, no misery," nothing that warms the cockles of the hearts of the artistes; just a laugh-filled time spent with a witty guy who just happened to make 533 deposits in a sperm bank (for money) 20 years ago. (Wait until you figure out the reason he wanted the money!) Through a clerical error, the clinic used only his deposits for a year. (At the clinic, he went by the name "Starbuck" for anonymity.)

Now middle-aged and completely oblivious to the clinic's old error, our hero is an over-grown adolescent, living with a lovely young policewoman who just found out she's pregnant. He drives a delivery truck for his father's butcher shop and mostly ignores all of his parking tickets and any temptation to grow up. Her news is NOT welcome.

Out of the blue, 142 of his...

Canadian comedy with serious undertones
Imagine my surprise when out of the blue this past weekend this movie appeared at the local art-house theatre here in Cincinnati, even though this movie is two years old and I think already available on DVD. I had heard about this movie, and the premise of the movie was such that I gave in and went to see it.

"Starbuck" (2011 release from Quebec; 110 min.) brings the story of David (played by Patrick Huard), who in the late 80s made frequent donations to the local sperm bank (why? because he needed the money! Starbuck? his alias at the sperm bank!) and now 20+ years later learns from the sperm bank's lawyer that his sperm was used on many occasions, resulting in no less than 533 biological kids (!), and that 142 of them now have filed a class action law suit to find out the identity of their biological father. As it is, Davis is a good-for-nothing who slacks on the job (at his father's butcher shop) and not very nice to his girlfriend (whom we learn has just become...

Very sweet story.
I adore this movie. Patrick Huard does a wonderful job portraying the varying emotions of a sperm donor whose kids come looking for him. My son was conceived in the same manner, and we have had contact with our sperm donor, but not with these wonderful results. It is definitely a "FEEL GOOD" movie I think everyone should enjoy.

Legend of Loch Lomond [HD]

Beautiful Scenery and Story of a Scottish Legend
I really enjoyed this short movie and think it could have made an interesting full length movie. The story of the song about Loch Lomond really comes to light in a new way after watching the movie. Very nicely done and gorgeous scenery. Definitely worth the watch, especially if you love stories that have a blend of historical Scotland and love story legends.

Entertaining
This is a very short movie and the theme is predicable, but enjoyable. I would recommend it because of the music and scenery.

great prime freebie...
From the way this was shot, I believe this was a imax movie that you see in museums. Beautiful panoramic vistas of Scotland, and a sweet tale of two lovers behind a popular Scottish ballad. A nice, quick film to watch free with your prime membership.

Evil Dead

essentially the original, yet it's own film.
When I first heard that Evil Dead was being remade, I wasn't happy. I've grown tired of reboots and remakes and I felt that remaking Evil Dead was akin to trampling on sacred ground. After discovering that Raimi and Campbell were backing it, I gave in and joined the the party, my uptight "Dead purist" friends be damned. This version starts out with the same creepy cabin in the same creepy woods but with a new group of twenty somethings unwittingly walking into the slaughter. A new element is introduced when we find out that the gang is trying to help their friend Mia recover from a nasty heroin addiction. Making the trip is her estranged brother David who wasn't around when Mia had to deal with their mother's death. Needless to say, there are a lot of family issues that the two never hashed out and hard feelings are being felt.

If being drug out to a creepy cabin in the woods by her friends wasn't bad enough, things are going to get worse for Mia. Ignoring all blatant...

Where the hell is the unrated cut??
I am not happy. Great remake, but I was expecting an Unrated cut for blu-ray. If the studio thinks they are double-dipping off me, think again. I'm waiting on the Hobbit (extended cuts already confirmed) and I'm waiting on this too. Stop being so damn greedy Hollywood!

AN OVERWHELMING CRESCENDO OF FEAR, TERROR AND HORROR
I admit I was somewhat skeptical in sitting down to watch this film because of the various unfavorable reviews I had read. Well - fuhgeddaboudem! This is NOT a remake of the original movie from 30+ years ago - this is an ultra-modern version of the basic theme of that film, and it succeeds superbly. It's very rare that a horror movie carries me from the first scene to the last with such a powerful, relentless and unstoppable feeling of accelerating dread and doom. ("The Exorcist" is the benchmark for me in this regard.) But this film did it for me, and because of so many factors, not least of which is the musical score - a brilliant synthesis of different styles and techniques that it can virtually stand alone as an hommage to the horror genre. The cast is uniformly excellent, the cinematography is astounding, the production values are first-rate and the director obviously had a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve - namely, to scare the living crap out of us - and he does...

Happy in the Valley

STOP!!!
ok so now I know the first two reviews where from either the director and the producer! This is a HORRIBLE MOVIE! Terrible in every sense of the word. The story makes absolutely ZERO sense and has no foundation, no direction, no POINT! The character development is comical, and it feels like they were actually just making things up as the went along. In the end you are certainly left HAPPY..that it was finally over!

Realistic & Touching
This is one of those Indie Films that will really take you by surprise. A young photographer named Wade is down on his luck and finds employment with a man who shoots erotic photos for a living. Stewart Fox was once a young dreamer himself and can relate to Wade's desire for a more kosher job, but he's learned the hard way that he has to do what it takes to pay the bills. Queenie, an eighteen year old model/actress, finds herself in a similar position and isn't quite ready to bear it all for the camera. With their careers hanging in the balance, the younger generation has to decide if they want to sell out or stick to their dreams. But that is only part of the story here. This movie is also filled with realistic relationship issues. Fox is an alcoholic struggling with his marriage, Queenie was abused by her brother which presents challenges to her blossoming relationship with Wade. The ex-nun across the street is walking around in an alcoholic daze, and her nephew the cop is...

Hidden Gem !!
I checked it out because I've always liked William Forsythe and read somewhere he won an award for it at a film festival. It looks very indie but I took a shot and turns out it was amazing! A hidden gem one of a kind dark comedy type movie. Really loved it and recommend it.

Charade 50th Anniversary  Edition (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Third Time Is A Charm
Anybody else out there own three copies of Charade on DVD?

It's a great movie, yeah, but not worth three copies. Well, maybe the lesson was worth three copies. The first one took me by surprise. Front Row Features put it out. Nice looking jewel case with the word LETTERBOX EDITION across the top. I had to have it. Couldn't wait to watch it. It was the worst piece of crap I'd ever seen shoveled onto DVD. Faded colors. Blurry pictures. Horrid sound that kept breaking up. It was worse than my ten-year-old VHS copy. I was mortified. Then someone told me there was a copy out there by a company called Criterion Collection, but the price was $40.00. No way, I thought, am I paying that much for a movie.

Next copy I bought was put out by Diamond Entertainment. I'll give them their due. They did a fairly good job of cleaning up whatever print they used. The picture is pretty good; color still slightly washed out, some flickering that's annoying. The sound...

Old Style Hollywood Glam in Gorgeous DVD Transfer
This is an exceptional DVD transfer of an exceptional movie. Criterion has done a magnificent job of restoring Charade to its colorful glory. The film is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The print is clear, crisp, and beautiful to behold. You feel as if you can reach out and touch the actors.

And what actors! The film features the dashing older version of Cary Grant and the youthful gamine Audrey Hepburn, with enough chemistry between them to ignite a fireworks factory. The plot is a convoluted and flimsy trifle about cold war spy shenanigans, with cases of mistaken identity and episodes of grave danger for Miss Audrey. But Cary, the classic good guy in cad's clothing, is there to save the day. In addition to which he provides chaste romance that sizzles beneath the civility.

Audio commentary is provided by director Stanley Donen and screenwriter Peter Stone. While interesting and funny in spots, it does drag a bit over the length of the film. It...

Criterion scores again!
I got this DVD for Christmas and I wasn't disappointed. Stanley Donen, director of musicals such as "Singin' In The Rain" starring Gene Kelly, brought together Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (who looks luminous, as always) in this wonderfully-written story about a Parisian widow (Hepburn) who is being pursued by three dangerous men (two of which are played by George Kennedy - an excellent "heavy" - and James Coburn at his most menacing) who want to find out about a large sum of money her dead husband supposedly had. Grant is the helpful stranger but eventually you begin to wonder: is he working with these men? Does he want the money for himself? Or is he really the handsome, older man Audrey finds herself falling in love with?

Enhanced by a lush score by the late Henry Mancini, photographed beautifully in Paris and containing first-rate acting and deliciously wicked dialogue by writer Peter Stone, "Charade" is a film that should be in every serious...

Wiener Dog Nationals

Family Movie Night
***Complimentary copy received in exchange for an honest review**

If you are looking for a great movie for family movie night, then look no further than Wiener Dog Nationals. This film has all the traditional aspects that make for a great children's movie and a few extras. A little boy and his family are struggling to get by after losing their mother. He finds a picture of his mom when she was a little girl holding a Dachshund she had raced. He decides all he wants for his birthday is the same type of dog his mom loved so much. They adopt a little wiener dog from a shelter and name her Shelly. She has one very special feature. She has a lightning bolt birthmark on her leg.

Not long after they get the dog, their is a local race and Shelly makes it to the top three. Soon they have the chance to go to the nationals but there are lots of factors working against them. The father loses his job, they get into trouble for being too friendly with a judge which could get...

Less plot, more wieners
The Dachshund is SO CUTE.. Plot, not so much... Predictable, but about what I expected. Perfect for wiener lovers out there.

Great family movie
This is a great family movie all the way. My grand kids and I sat and watched it and they really enjoyed watching the movie. I would suggest it for any family movie night.

Apocalyptic Alien Love Triangle

I obviously have no concept of the value of a $1.99
... because I paid that, REAL money, in US dollars, to see this film. Willfully. No duress was involved.

Surprisingly, the box cover wasn't enough to deter me. I knew in my heart of hearts it could only be absolutely, soul crushingly terri-bad, but some masochistic part of me, the same part that wants to touch an orange, glowing heating element in the oven just to see HOW bad it would hurt, wondered "what if it's one of those little gems, one of those rare finds that is SO bad, it circumnavigates the scale of awfulness and is actually quite fun?"

It could happen.

It didn't.

By any conceivable metric through which one can measure a movie, this one scores 0.0001 stars. Directing, acting, script, line delivery, special effects (and by "special," I mean "short bus."), you name it. The minimum 1 star, A WHOLE ENTIRE STAR, is so egregiously generous, it hurts my soul.

Before you pay money to see this (or see it for free... or some...

The Host

The book was definitely better, MUCH better (spoilers)
First, let me say, I'm not a "Twi-hard." I don't have any interest in sparkly vampires and ripped werewolves. And as a heterosexual male who is not a teenager, that's not too surprising. But I did really love the novel "the Host." For me, the concept is sort of like "Dances with Wolves" or "Avatar." But instead of having a human run off to live with giant blue smurfs, here we have a protagonist who is truly alien and learns to become human.

I think there are three problems with the film:

1. The thing that almost sunk the movie for me was the way the character of Melanie Stryder was manifested in Wanda's head. I didn't mind the use of voice-overs, but I did mind the way that "Melanie" came across...sometimes, she sounded like a petulant 14 year-old and not the 20 year-old woman she was in the story. When Saoirse Ronan was in Wanda mode, I found her mostly more convincing and otherworldly (although near the end, she started sounding like a typical human...

The Host- The movie
I really enjoyed this movie. It had all the ups and downs I like to see when I watch a movie. It was entertaining and interesting. No movie is ever just like the book so I don't know why we even try to compare. Your imagination is always better than the movie. I will buy this movie because I enjoyed it that much. I do enjoy science fiction and I think this movie will fit right in with my DVD collection.

from a fan of the book...
This movie was very well made and well acted. While the storyline differed from the book, these changes were necessary to tell the story in two hours. I hope Stephanie Meyer decides to complete some follow up novels so that this story may continue.

Running Free [HD]

Myth busted: Wolverines can be very affectionate to humans
I first viewed this movie about 10 or 12 years ago, and I truly fell in love with it, and shortly thereafter contacted its maker, Steve Kroschel.

Wolverines, which this movie is about, have a ferocious reputation in all of the far North latitudes, where they live still. American indians have told stories for many centuries about their cunning, intelligence and fierceness, and trappers hated and feared them.

This story is about a young boy who becomes friends with an orphaned "kit" -as baby wolverines are called- during a summer in the Alaskan wilderness. The beauty of the scenery and the touching affection between the two of them is very heart-warming and shows not only the potential fierceness that a wolverine is capable of when facing grizzly bears and wolves, but also the deep affection they are capable of with humans who treat them well and the constant playfulness that is naturally part of their nature, as it is with their cousins, the otters...

Contagion

Catch A Cold
Reposted from September 25, 2011

It figures a week after I've seen CONTAGION, director Steven Soderbergh's latest ensemble film, I come down with a cold and a slight cough. Nothing that can't be cured easily with two gel capsules and a glass of water, mind you; however, being sick this week did cause me to pause about the circumstances of my situation.

My dumb cold is nothing compared to the shellacking that Gwyneth Paltrow's character goes through within the first 20 minutes of the film: Rushed to the emergency room by hubby Matt Damon, Paltrow goes bug-eyed, convulses, and flatlines. Yep, Our Lady of GOOP goes down in the first half of the film. Much of Contagion is straight to the point with a sledgehammer, but the stakes are never so much higher as soon as Soderbergh kills off one of its leading stars.

Similar to the multi-threaded storytelling seen in TRAFFIC, CONTAGION tracks a global epidemic in multiple locales across 90-minutes-or-so. One...

If You Like Realism in Your Medical Thrillers....
This film is close to being a hybrid between a documentary and fictional tale. It is also an ensemble cast which can be difficult to pull off but this movie manages it. Basically, a very lethal virus sweeps the world, turning into a pandemic. There is HUGE loss of life until a vaccine is developed. The first case which brings it into the USA is Gwyn Paltrow who flies home from Asia to Minnesota. Within a very short time of being home with a cold, she goes into convulsions, is taken to the hospital and dies. Her son goes next and is replicates at swift speed after that. I never once felt that this was a science fiction film or one of these comic book based action films. It seemed to develop exactly as such a pandemic would develop around the world.

There is an all star cast. It would be nice to have more screen time for some of them but then we'd miss getting the bigger picture. People do panic, loot, try to escape, kidnap people for vaccine trades and so forth and so...

No Cliche here! I loved it!
For those who didn't think it was exciting enough, leave the "evil general" cliché edge-of-the-seat excitement to the other superficial movies - I'm glad Contagion was above that.

The intelligent unfolding of the realities of human nature in what would really happen if a deadly epidemic spread through the population was scary and thought provoking enough. There wasn't one scene in the movie that I couldn't imagine happening if this were real.

It was interesting, well written, great cast and acting, and perfectly told the story.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Don't have high expectations, entertaining
I don't get the low reviews on this, people complaining about the story and the acting...? I saw the first one, so my expectations for this were low. I went into this expecting to see over-the-top action, corny lines, and explosions. The movie delivered. If you want deep storyline and meaningful conversations, then you should go see another flick. If you want to see people get blown up, then watch this.

Just. Plain. Fun...
Let's be clear that "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" is an action movie based on a comic book and a toy action figure. It features virtually non-stop action, some terrific special effects, and a comic book plot. This is not "Patton" or "The Ten Commandments" or even "Die Hard." It is a fun, no-brainer movie in which the good guys eventually win and the bad guys eventually lose, but some of the bad guys escape to set up the next movie.

As the movie opens, the GI Joes, an elite American special operations combat unit, are in action, securing some loose Pakistani nuclear weapons from insurgents in a superb action sequence inside a military facility. However, the Joes are framed by the President, who is really an impersonator planted by the terrorist organization Cobra. The fake President sends a military strike after the Joes, wiping out the unit. The Cobra organization liberates its imprisoned leader and executes its clever plan to take over the world.

Fortunately,...

Gi Joe Retaliation 3D Review
This 3D review is intended for those with 3DTVs and/or fans of 3D.

GI Joe Retaliation was originally meant to be released during summer 2012, but was delayed till March 29, 2013 to be converted into 3D. So did they have enough time to make the 3D worth our time and frustration (of GI Joe fans) having to wait even longer to see the movie in theaters?

Absolutely. The 3D is very powerfully rendered in GI Joe Retaliation. This is not a half baked 3D effort as many of the earlier, hurried 3D conversions of films like Clash of the Titans' poor 3D. The 3D here offers unexpectedly outstanding dimension and depth in many of the cool action scenes, coupled with a generous amount of pop outs. It's been said the Snake Eyes scene was noteworthy (with Snake Eyes portrayed on the Blu Ray 3D cover), and indeed it is as the 3D gives that scene depth the likes of which are rarely seen in conversions. Thankfully the rest of the movie holds up well in 3D.

3D Overall:...

American Courtesans

I loved this movie and the women in it
I wanted more. I saw the film for the first time in Phoenix when it debuted. Since then I have had time to think things over and I came to the conclusion that I wanted more. I was excited that American Courtesans was coming out on Amazon so I could watch it. The one thing that came to mind shortly after I saw the film for the first time is that I would like to be friends with all these women. I like them, and not in a feel sorry for, pity kind of way. I really like them. They are strong, passionate, courageous women who have made the film so selflessly. This is rarely done enough in today's world. This film will not patronize you, so be ready for the truth. The women escorts are not transformed into icons or dummyied down into bimbos. They are real, and that's what makes American Courtesans so engaging. The stereotype was broken, and I could see them for who they are. The director did a great job at working with these women and allowing them to be themselves. I loved the film and...

A different style of documentary
This isn't one of those typical flashy, overproduced documentaries, like "Supersize Me", or others. Not that there is anything wrong with those documentaries. This one is simple yet profound. Basically it is a series of interviews edited together. There is no music, camera angles, special cinematography strategically placed to heighten the experience. There is no heavy handiness in pushing a political view or agenda. Sure it is pro-courtesan and you know that going into the movie. But what you don't know that the simple act of hearing people tell their own personal story, the most powerful message get's conveyed, the message of humanity. This movie goes beyond just talking about the world of Courtesans, it is a commentary on all our worlds, our lives as humans. God Bless you Kristen, job well done!

Somewhere [HD]

A beautiful meditation on loneliness and love
Somewhere is a beautiful meditative film about Johnny Marco (played by Stephen Dorff), a lonely, bored, dissolute Hollywood star who, by spending time with his daughter, Cleo (played by Elle Fanning) learns to love again. Elle Fanning is absolutely delightful in the role -- she is so sweet, natural, and at times, charmingly awkward. Her youth and unpretentious beauty are an effective foil to Stephen Dorff's character, who parties hard on a regular basis and looks it. Johnny is in a state of existential ennui; he lacks emotional connection with others and lives a life of instant gratification that is devoid of meaning. When Cleo's mother leaves Cleo with Johnny for an extended period of time, it gives him the chance to renew his relationship with her and thaw his heart. By learning to love Cleo, Johnny is forced to face the emptiness in his life and decides to change.

Not quite over the rainbow...
Being the fan of Sophia Coppola that I am, `Somewhere' was my most anticipated film from last year. I literally could not wait to see it, so much so that I downloaded it to my computer months before it was released in theaters near me so that I could watch it.

For me, `Somewhere' doesn't quite live up to my expectations.

First things first, this is not a bad film at all. In fact, it is a very good film. Some of my friends have noted that they feel this is Coppola's most mature offering, and in many ways I totally agree. She has a beautiful knack for fleshing out the humanity in her stories with such graceful subtlety. She masters that here, allowing the fluid movement of the scenes to do most of the talking. While some would make sweeping statements that this is, `by far', we worst film, I can only half agree. While she shows definite maturity here, this is my least favorite of her films. In that same respect though, I can't say `by far' since the film is...

coppola knows about the reality of movie stars
sophia coppola, the writer and director, is francis coppola's daughter. her cousin is nicholas cage. another cousin is jason schwartzman (Bored to Death on HBO), whose mother is talia shire (Rocky), francis's sister. sofia was married to director spike jonze. she has probably known no one but movie people her entire life. her movie is about a movie star who ,far from being a fascinating guy, is closer to being a total zero in personality. and, of course, everyone who barely knows him thinks he is fascinating. sofia coppola paints a devastating portrait of a top actor in the first half of this movie.

i found it very funny but you might miss the satire it is so low key. johnny, played by stephen dorf, is like an unmade bed walking around. he can barely be bothered to comb his hair, change his clothes or do much but passively participate. he hires twin pole dancers and falls asleep during their act. he falls asleep during sex. his costar finds him a big nothing. women...

Low Fidelity

For those who hunger for a little GH . . .
If you come to this film with an anticipation of greatness - superior writing, spellbinding plots, fabulous direction, and/or award-worthy acting, well - you're in the wrong place. Though it has moments of humor, and moments that might stir bits of nostalgia about lost youth and broken promises, and moments of bright dialogue, it's not particularly original or mind-blowing. BUT, if you come to it because there's just not enough Gale Harold in the world of films, then you're exactly where you want to be. He looks - well, there's no need to tell you how he looks, is there? He looks like Gale Harold. And his acting is better than most of the rest of the cast. Even though he's listed as a co-star, the film is mostly about him and his relationship with his sexually-confused wife and his reunion with a lost love, so there's plenty of him to be enjoyed. It's not a great movie, by any means, and it offers up a message - about feminism and marital devotion - that I found slightly...

Gale harold Smokin' hot!
Good movie. If you're a fan of Gale Harold, watch this. The other actors were believable. Some funny moments. I enjoyed it.

He's Way More Famous Than You [HD]

Cult Classic in the Making
Humor may not be for the faint of heart (kinda like Bridesmaids-extreme-type-comedy) but funny as all hell especially if you know anything about the movie industry! Crazy comedy that holds no punches, be prepared for a self-debasing laugh fest that doesn't take itself too seriously (and you shouldn't either). Destined to be a cult classic!

Horrible vanity project
Not sure what Halley Pfeiffer hoped to get from this but it does nothing but make her look awful. if there's a joke somewhere, I hope it's on her. Excruciatingly terrible film and an embarrassment for everyone involved.

He's Way More Famous Than You

Jackie Chan: Battle Creek Brawl / City Hunter [Blu-ray]

Ehhh
City Hunter is the first of these Shout Factory Jackie Chan movies to be presented in actual HD. Though it is soft. Big Brawl looks terrible though.

Nice Jackie Chan Two Pack
City Hunter is a fun 90s HK flick directed by Wong Jing. While the humor is rather juvenile the final fight with Richard Norton makes it all worth it.

Good Old School Martial Arts Flicks
Battle Creek Brawl was one of my Kid Time Favorites growing up. One of the first time seeing Jackie Chan and like everyone else jumped started my Martial Arts Training.
Good story, Great Action for Old school style and Jackie is always funny.
City Hunter is fairly Kooky and story is just goofy. Some good martial arts action and some good stunts but overall I would say only rate about a 5 out of 10. Not one of Jackies better flicks.

The Brood

Cronenberg Gets Personal
THE BROOD is an early film for director David Cronenberg who is perhaps now better known for his dramatic films such as A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, EASTERN PROMISES, and A DANGEROUS METHOD. But, as most of us know, he started his career making what is known as Venereal Horror, or Body Horror. THE BROOD is an excellent example.

The film deals with the sudden appearance of disfigured child murderers who terrorize a Toronto family that is going through a difficult divorce. The wife, Nola (played by Samantha Eggar), is at a psychological retreat where she is being treated by Psychiatrist Hal Raglan (played by Oliver Reed), who has pioneered "psychoplasmics". After spending the weekend with Nola, her husband Frank (played by Art Hingle) discovers that there are bruises and scratches on their daughter's back. He immediately goes to Raglan, tells him that he will not be bringing his daughter anymore and believes that Raglan's techniques are hurting Nola. Two murders ensue, and...

Classic 70s Horror!
You cannot call yourself a Horror fan until you've seen this. It has the great slow lead up to the shocking end, and actually the effects are good. A must see!!

A fave from my youth...
I'm a horror/thriller author and I always state The Brood as one of the films which gave me purpose and a plan. The Brood (1979) is good, classic horror. Some of the creepiest scenes ever recorded on film! DO NOT MISS...it's a must for all horror lovers!
